Band and live recording

Your musicians play in the same 38 m² live room while the engineer listens in the control room, balances levels and gives everyone a separate headphone mix.

Band playing together in live room with view to control room

Live recording is about interaction: the drummer locks with the bass, guitars respond to accents and everyone shares one click in the cans. At Mushrumpmirami in Amsterdam East we place drums, amps and instruments so sightlines stay open to each other and to the control-room window. You keep the feel of rehearsal while we capture a clean multitrack.

The service suits rock, indie, funk, jazz and similar line-ups up to 6 people. You might finish one song in a short session, track an EP across several days or record only the rhythm section for later overdubs. Mixing and mastering are separate steps; after the session we deliver raw or consolidated multitracks as agreed.

Process

  1. 01

    Brief

Send setlist, tempos and references through contact. Within 1 business day you receive a time estimate and quote.

  2. 02

    Setup

Before you arrive we prep patching and headphone sends. On the day we tune the room to your lineup and check DIs and amps.

  3. 03

    Tracking

We capture full takes per song plus targeted overdubs. Between passes you hear rough mixes in the control room to judge energy and arrangement.

  4. 04

    Handover

The engineer exports multitracks, logs take numbers and shares a download link. We keep project backups for 6 months on our side.

Live room and control room

The live room is about 38 m², one of 3 treated spaces at Weesperzijde 96. Glass to the 22 m² control room stays clear for eye contact; talkback covers whispers during takes. 2 pairs of nearfield monitors in the control room give you a honest check after each pass.

We run 12 microphone preamps with enough inputs for a full kit, bass amp, guitar cabs and several DI lines. Headphone outputs: 8 — enough for a typical band plus a conductor or producer on the side.

Headphone mixes

Each player gets a personal mix: more click, less guitar, extra overheads — all adjustable during soundcheck. Drummers usually receive a compressed cue so loud sections do not jump. Singers performing live with the band get a dedicated vocal-and-guide feed.

If you tour with your own in-ear rig, bring it as long as levels match our inputs. Spare studio headphones are available; for long days you may prefer your own pair for comfort.

Who this is for

Bands that want songs captured with everyone in one space: straight-ahead rock, soul with horns, trios with guests, or session drummers playing through a local lineup. Labels and producers also book the room to lock rhythm tracks before overdubs elsewhere.

Minimum age 16 applies to everyone on site. Younger musicians are welcome by prior agreement with an adult present throughout; mention ages when you book.

Prep and schedule

Efficient days start at home: fresh strings, tuned drums, a short arrangement map. Send demos, BPM and song order at least three days ahead. Our guide band recording budget explains how to split hours between tracking, overdubs and breaks.

Allow travel time: The studio is on Weesperzijde in Amsterdam East. From Amsterdam Amstel station it is about an 8-minute walk along the Amstel. Tram 12 stops nearby; metro lines 51, 53 and 54 serve Amstel. On-street parking is limited; bike racks are right outside the entrance. Loading is from the street; parking is limited and bike racks sit outside the door. Hours: Monday to Friday 10:00–22:00, Saturday 11:00–18:00. Closed Sunday. By appointment only..

Rates and billing

Studio time is billed per started hour at €115 (incl. 21% VAT) or as an eight-hour day at €750. If a day runs long, extra hours after the day rate cost €135 each. Amounts include VAT; B2B invoices also show net figures where required.

Band rate summary
OptionPrice incl. VAT
Per hour€115
Full day (8 hours)€750
Extra hour after day rate€135

Confirmation requires a 25% deposit; the balance is due after the session unless we agree written B2B terms (14 days). Free cancellation up to 7 days before the date; see terms and conditions for the rest.

Delivery and file formats

Default delivery is 24-bit WAV per track, aligned to one timeline, with clear names such as DRUM_Kick_In and GTR_Rhythm_L. On request the engineer can also export a DAW session archive or stereo rough mixes per take for quick selection at home.

We send multitracks via secure download and retain project data for 6 months before deletion unless you ask for an extension. Keep your own backup on SSD or cloud within that window.

Not included in the hourly rate

Outside musicians, rental of vintage mics beyond our standard locker, dedicated drum tuning by a specialist and travel for engineers outside Amsterdam sit outside the base rate. Mixing and mastering are separate services — useful if you mix elsewhere but want tracking in Amsterdam.

You arrange catering; cafés and shops near Weesperzijde are a short walk. Alcohol is not allowed during sessions; water and tea are available in the studio.

Engineers on your session

Lars van der Berg leads most band days as recording engineer and coordinates prep with studio manager Noah Jansen. During busy weeks a freelance engineer who knows our patch and naming rules may take the desk; we tell you in advance who runs the session.

Mastering engineer Meike de Vries is not usually on live dates, but you can book a short listening pass if you want to move straight toward mastering. For rights and delivery around masters, read mastering rights and delivery.

FAQ

How many songs fit in one day?

It depends on arrangement and how finished you want takes. Many guitar-led bands finish three to five songs in eight hours when arrangements are settled. Heavier material or many overdubs often needs a second day — ask via contact for a realistic plan.

Can we bring our own amps and drums?

Yes. Our backline is a fallback; your sound is welcome when it connects safely to our patch. List what you bring so we reserve inputs and floor space.

Can we mix in the same studio afterwards?

When the calendar allows. Book mixing as its own service at the rates on our services page so the band day stays focused on performance.

What if a member is ill?

Contact us quickly on 020 737 1846 or [email protected]. Cancellation more than 7 days ahead is free; closer dates follow terms and conditions on deposits and rescheduling.
